Guillermo Lorenzo

Guillermo Lorenzo came to the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences thanks to a Peter O’Donnell Jr. Postdoctoral Fellowship in September 2019. Previously, he graduated in Civil Engineering at the University of A Coruña (Spain), where he also obtained his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Hector Gomez with a thesis entitled “Tissue-scale, patient-specific modeling and simulation of prostate cancer growth”. Before coming to Austin, he was also a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pavia (Italy) under the supervision of Prof. Alessandro Reali, where he continued his work on computational modeling of prostate cancer growth and treatment.

Guillermo is working on an image-based, organ-scale computational model of neoadjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer in which the tumor cell proliferation is explicitly linked to the patient’s drug protocol, also incorporating the potential synergies between concomitant drugs. He will be transferring in vitro results on drug combination effects in several breast cancer cell lines to an in vivo tumor growth scenario. Additionally, Guillermo will continue working on the computational modeling of prostate cancer growth, also in collaboration with Prof. Thomas J. R. Hughes. His focus is now on studying the predictive power of PSA dynamics to predict the outcome of radiotherapy, describing the pathological deformation of the prostate and how it affects tumor growth, and developing an image-based, organ-scale computational model of prostate cancer to enable the early identification of indolent and potentially hazardous tumors in active surveillance cohorts.
